Spurred by books, movies, visitors flock to sites within Gettysburg NMP, causing erosion and other damage

On July 2, 1863, Union Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain led his  20th Maine Regiment headlong into battle on a boulder-strewn hillside in Gettysburg.

His regiment's stunning attack blunted the Confederate assault on Little Round Top and is widely credited as the pivotal victory of the Battle of Gettysburg, which sealed the South's defeat.
