Tree removal to protect habitat for rare endemic wildflower angers some trail users at Golden Gate NRA

In the name of saving rare grasslands, Golden Gate National Recreation Area staff have undertaken a project in Montara to preserve the endangered Hickman’s potentilla, a plant with buttercup yellow petals in the shape of hearts.

“It’s a very sweet, little plant,” said Susie Bennett, the project’s leader and a GGNRA national resource management specialist. She added that she sees these plants, which die every winter and pop back to life each summer for up to 30 years, as symbols.
